Around here, holiday time also means Potato Sausage time. Our Potato Sausage has been a part of the Hempler family tradition for as long as I can remember. My grandmother used to serve this traditional Swedish dish at every family gathering during the holidays.
Loaded with chunks of potatoes and mildly seasoned with onion and spices, it’s actually a very versatile sausage, great for special gatherings and also for everyday family meals! One favorite way to eat it is with applesauce – Oma (Grandma) always had her homemade applesauce available and all the grandkids had fun dipping the sausage in it! The Potato Sausage is also excellent for breakfast with scrambled eggs and pancakes.
As this is a fully cooked sausage, to serve the Potato Sausage, simply re-heat in water at a slow rolling boil for about 10 minutes and then pan fry with a little oil until the sausage gets nice and crispy on the outside.
This traditional sausage is only available for a limited time each year, between November 1st and January 31st. You can find it now at Haggen, Safeway and Central Market Stores. I hope you will give it a try.
Happy Holidays from our family to yours!
